Why? Because he’s 42-frickin-years-old and he’s making a comeback.
I also happen to be 42 and truth be told, I barely remember Muster from his prime. But I’ll be following the Nord LB Open, an ATP Challenger tournament taking place in Braunschweig, Germany, starting 28 June, to see how he does. I hope he wins it all. Hell, I hope he earns an entry into the U.S. Open and takes that too. He is my new hero.
You women out there had Navratilova to inspire you – winning Mixed Doubles tournaments well into her 40s (maybe even 50s, I can’t remember at the moment – must be old age).
Us guys? The best we had was Jimmy Connors, who made a run to the semis of the U.S. Open when he was 39, or something like that. He wasn’t even 40! So, for us, 39 is over the hill. Old. Decrepit. One foot in the grave.
Unless … Muster can win some matches, maybe even a tournament, playing against today’s players in their prime. Then everything changes. All of us 40-something club players become young again, instantly, magically.
Go Thomas! Win one for the gimpers.
You scratch our back and I promise you, we’ll buy your wine. It’s a win-win.
